La-Keeyatta Steward – meditation has changed my life
I started meditating more than a year ago. I found out about it through a program at my high school that was having mindfulness meditation groups in schools. Now I try to meditate daily, though I’m not always successful. But I do meditate every Tuesday at the Brooklyn Zen Center for at least 30 minutes with the teen meditation group. Meditation has changed my life. Now that I meditate I look at people differently. I don’t judge as much and my mindset is more open.
Another big thing about meditation is that it opened up my eyes. For example, I had a lot of problems at home with my mom. When I started meditation, I looked at her differently. I understood the pain that she is going through in her life. I had a more positive response. I didn’t react in a flash from a negative thought. I didn’t have a negative reaction. I just felt her, felt how she felt, felt what she was saying to me, and I then I just let it go.
